Joystick Features

  • Two tiny Micro-Light true proportional hall-effect joysticks require only 1/4" inch or 5mm of movement of a lip or fingertip (up to 1/2" or 10 mm) with NO internal moving contact parts.
  • Ultra-precise - joystick deflection is sensed electronically in a magnetic field. They will NEVER lose their center point or wear out and begin to drift over time like resistive joysticks.
  • Slightly rubbery push-on joystick knobs are 3D-printed and can be completely customized by anyone with access to a 3D printer or special order.  We are considering a few variations, such as concave for a fingertip or tongue,  here and with a small hole for built-in very pliable 1/16 inch silicone Sip-n-Puff tube. Please give us your feedback?
  • Joystick sensitivity and responsiveness are all programmable internally independent of any system,  but can also be modified externally by the Xbox Adaptive Controller or Titan 2 Adapter.

Button Features

  • Breakout box for up to 7 ability switches is available to plug into each joystick.  (Not needed if using Versatility v5 with  I figure out Microsoft Xbox Adaptive Controller or Hori Nintendo Switch Adaptive Controller)
  • Our unique Latching "2x" Function Buttons allows buttons 1-7 to have a 2nd or specialty function (such as pushing multiple buttons simultaneously) or send commands to your team or squad.
  • Optionally add our Hands-free Sip-n-Puff Switches for quick, accurate, hands-free sniper shots in first-person shooters, hands-free gas & brake when racing, and more!

History

Designed by Mark Felling of Broadened Horizons who in 2008 pioneered the current concept of a controller that adapts to the user's abilities, allowing them to play ANY game AS DESIGNED, not modified or simplified for the disabled. Mark's original measure of success was that you should be able to play online in anonymity until you win and only then happen to reveal your limitations as bragging rights!

Versatility v5 is the most recent controller introduced by Mark Felling, a quadriplegic Electrical and Rehabilitation engineer whose original Versatility Adaptive Game Controller by Broadened Horizons' 1st introduced in 2008, changed the World of gaming for the disabled by empowering individuals with even the most severe physical limitations to play as equals online. With that first Versatility prototype, Mark introduced the concept of mapping the human ability to the game designer's intent in a low-tech way that required no special skills and could be easily reconfigured from one game to another by a non-technical caregiver or grandmother while allowing for complete customization to each individual's abilities and even preferences.

A 28-year-old young man confined to bed from Duchesne Muscular Dystrophy who went by the handle Kit online, was the 1st user of the 1st Versatility prototype in 2008. When he posted an unabashed video of himself lying in bed, very tiny and frail playing online anonymously and winning his video went viral and became the  4th most popular post on the PlayStation Network ever.  In the video he was using only the slightest movements of 1 finger, a big toe, winking his eyes, moving the joysticks with his tongue, and pushing his tongue up against the inside walls of his cheeks to activate two more light touch lever switches, while blowing on a straw. He loved that the Versatility allowed him to play ANY game on ANY console "nearly competitive with my Pro-gamer friends".

Later in 2010, an advocate brought Mark's Versatility v2 and Ultimate Arcade v2 to Redmond, WA inspired Microsoft employees in 2010 who eventually pitched the idea in 2015 which became the 2018 release of the Microsoft Xbox Adaptive Controller and later the Hori Adaptive Controller for Nintendo Switch.
