What is a Stroke? A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is obstructed, cutting off the supply of oxygen and damaging brain tissue. A stroke could cause aphasia which can affect the ability to speak. More information

Typical abilities of persons with Stroke: Some people who have strokes remain more able-bodied than others. Many can still speak, walk, and do every day tasks while others may have more limitation.

Typical disabilities: When a stroke occurs, the abilities controlled by that area of the brain are lost. Some people only experience minor problems such as weakness in an arm or leg, whereas others can be paralyzed or lose the ability to speak.

What is Aphasia? Aphasia is a disorder caused by damage to the parts of the brain responsible for language.

Typical abilities of persons with Aphasia: People with aphasia have trouble accessing ideas and thoughts through language, but not the ideas and thoughts themselves that is disrupted. Intelligence is normally left fully intact.

Typical disabilities: Signs of the disorder include difficulty in expressing oneself when speaking, trouble understanding speech, and difficulty with reading and writing
