To answer the question at the end of this article. I would say no, not the way we’re going. There is no market-based answer for those with severe disabilities. The fact that they have to ask the question demonstrates the fact that there is no market-based answer for the question. I’d be interested to learn if anyone comes up with one. This gem, “The United States and many nations have been experimenting with socialism to distribute income based on need to meet the basic need for healthcare. This hasn’t worked.” is completely ideological and demonstrates the authors aim with this article. There are clearly socialist models that could be incorporated into our capitalist system to care for this segment of our population that would work better than any mythical market-based strategy. The question is, would the ideologs ever allow them to work? We have socialist programs that work incredibly well already in the United States. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to name the most popular. They have their issues of course but could be fixed if congress would act. We must get past these ideological bottlenecks if we are going to implement the best possible solutions. There are many examples of countries using hybrid economic models to meet the needs of their people. The United States is one of them.
